Halloween Movie Night: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (all ages)

Since the creation of Hollywood, filmmakers have taken old folklore and spooky stories and transformed them into the movies that we now associate with Halloween. Henricus will be showing two of these traditional black and white silent films from 1922 and offer lectures beforehand to address the historical perspectives and topics related to these movies.

Lectures will take place inside the recreated church/meeting hall and attendees will have first choice on seating for the film afterwards. Movies will be outdoors on the lawn (or in the church if inclement weather.) Please bring your own blanket, chairs, and snacks!

Casper the Friendly Ghost in Boo Moon (1954) Join Casper as he travels to the moon in this classic cartoon! While there he’s captured by moon men but earns their trust by helping King Luna defend their city from tree monsters!

The Haunted Mouse (1941) This classic Looney Tunes short, directed by Tex Avery, follows a cat’s adventures in a town full of 100 ghosts. One of the ghosts happens to be a mouse, who wants revenge on cats for how they treated him in the past

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1922) Starring Will Rogers, this black and white silent film tells the story of the new schoolteacher of Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane. Crane has already heard of the village’s legendary ghost, a Headless Horseman (Legend of Sleepy Hollow) who is said to be searching for the head that he lost in battle. The schoolteacher has barely arrived when he begins to pursue the beautiful young heiress Katrina Van Tassel, angering Abraham Van Brunt, who is courting her. Crane’s harsh, small-minded approach to teaching also turns some of the villagers against him. Soon there many who would like to see him leave the village altogether.
