Walking Tour: Beyond the Palisades

Dutch Gap’s Mysterious and Unknown History from the 18th through the 21st Centuries

This 90-minute walking tour will bring visitors to the Henricus bluff on the James River and will touch on the many layers of history here. Your tour through time will cover the 17th-century with the Powhatan Indians and founding of Henricus fort, the 1781 Revolutionary War battle of Osborne’s Landing, the transformations of the early republic and subsequent landowners – including the communities and enslaved populations – and the Civil War with the Union occupation of the land. The final part of this tour will examine the remains of the lightkeeper’s house, and the monuments found on the bluff, as well as Dutch Gap’s use in WWI.  Fee includes admission to Henricus Historical Park.
