Growing Tobacco

“This Vile Custome” English Tobacco Growing from the 17th to 18th Centuries

Encounter interpreters readying the fields for the tobacco season. Visitors will get a glimpse of how Powhatan Indians grew tobacco before any Europeans arrived in the New World and how English Virginia colonists grew their crops from the 17th through the 18th centuries.
