Civil War Field Engineering
Interpreters will demonstrate how Union and Confederate soldiers dug into the ground and built “bombproofs” and fortifications to stay alive during the fighting at Dutch Gap 1864-1865. See how these men lived under the protections of earth and wood as one soldier called, “Gopher Hole Sogers.” Children will be able to take a shovel, cup, or plate and help dig in! Musket demonstrations will take place throughout the day.
