Civil War Week

Living history interpreters will be exploring different topics regarding the soldiers, sailors and civilians around the Varina and Dutch Gap areas from 1864 – 1865.  Demonstrations will focus on:

  • Weapons, clothing and gear of the Union and Confederate soldiers
  • Military engineering, including the making and use of abatis, gabions, sandbags and a bombproof
  • Food of the civilians of Varina, the enslaved people around Dutch Gap and the Union and Confederate soldiers.
  • The role of civilians – both Northerners and local Virginians – during the war around Dutch Gap
